BG Mines: Powering the Future of Coal Mining
BG Mines, a powerhouse in the mining industry, is a wholly owned subsidiary of BG Global and a majority stakeholder in Mnotho Coal (Pty) Limited. Through this strategic positioning, BG Mines holds an influential presence in one of South Africa’s most resource-rich coal territories, owning 100% of South Witbank Colliery.
South Witbank Colliery: A Legacy of Strength and Sustainability
Located just 12 kilometers outside Witbank, adjacent to Thungela’s Navigation wash plant, South Witbank Colliery spans an impressive 3,000 hectares of prime coal-rich land. As the sole holder of both the mining and surface rights, Mnotho Coal controls an asset with a deep-rooted history in South Africa’s coal sector.
Once mined underground in the 1970s by Ingwe Holdings (Pty) Ltd, a wholly owned company of Seriti resources, formed in the early 60’s by the then BHP Billitons Energy Coal Holdings business unit. Mnotho Coal secured this high-value asset from Seriti, marking the dawn of a new era in coal production and supply.
Unmatched Reserves, Unlimited Potential
With a staggering 400 million tons of in-situ coal reserves and a projected life of mine exceeding 55 years, South Witbank Colliery is set to redefine coal mining in the region. Operating at full capacity, the mine will produce up to 400,000 tons of run-of-mine (RoM) coal per month, supplying both domestic and export markets with high-quality 6,000 kcal and 4,800 kcal thermal coal.
